The Salt Lake Valley Solid Waste Facility’s Recycling Information Office provides guided tours for a variety of groups such as primary and secondary schools, college or university classes, and business professionals. Your group will be greeted at the Education/Training center. A brief introduction describes the differences between a dump and a landfill. Topics include issues such as littering, burning, and illegal dumping. All negatively impact the air, water, soil, wildlife and their habitats.
Then we focus on the environmental engineering of the Salt Lake Valley Landfill. We point out the importance of protecting our groundwater, air, and soil by constructing various protection systems such as the 60 millimeter HDPE liner, methane gas, and leachate collection systems. We have a small scale cross-section of our landfill protection system which is a very important component of our facility.
The discussion continues with recycling where we discuss how we use natural earth elements to make aluminum cans, paper, glass containers, and the wide variety of plastics. We point out the various decomposition rates of various materials and talk about the issue of animals becoming separated from homes because of open residential garbage containers.
A large display board shows how the collected recyclable materials are made into useful products which can be purchased by consumers thus completing the reuse cycle. The 21-day challenge encourages each of our visitors to make recycling a habit at school/work, home, and in their community.
We have a variety of display items for both students and adults to examine. We strive to maintain our Education/Training Center to provide answers to common questions many Salt Lake County residents have about solid waste and recycling practices.
We are certain that you will learn a great deal by attending a tour at our facility. If it is not possible to come to our facility, we have a traveling display we can set up at a school or place of employment. Please take some time to visit our “tours and presentations” section to become familiar with the type of information we need to get your group signed up for a tour or presentation.
