Remember oil, antifreeze, paint, mercury (for more information on mercury click here: hazards of mercury) and other harmful chemicals should not be disposed of in trash cans, sink drains, storm drains or landfill tipping faces.

If these chemicals are stored or disposed of improperly, they may seep into out environment and poison our land, air and water.

Residents of Salt Lake County can dispose of their HHW free of charge at any of the HHW facilities (541-4078).

NO BUSINESS ELECTRONIC WASTE WILL BE ACCEPTED.

(Business electronic waste will be rejected and the County Health Department will be notified of the rejected load per Landfill regulations).

Reuse Shed

Many reusable products such as paint are brought in for disposal. Our staff place these items in our reuse shed and are available free to the public at the Salt Lake Valley Solid Waste Facility. (Salt Lake Valley Landfill)

Please be advised that if you should decide to come to our facility to get some paint, bring a paint can opener (aka screw driver) and a paint stir stick.  These items will be helpful in deciding whether or not the paint is suitable for your use (i.e., paint color and quality).

Alternatives to potentially hazardous household chemical cleaners

All-purpose cleaner:
Clean spills or dirty area immediately.  Try this solution: 1 quart warm water, 1 teaspoon liquid soap, 1 teaspoon borax, squeeze of lemon or splash of vinegar.
Disinfectants:
1 teaspoon non-chlorine bleach mixed with 1 gallon of water.
Drain cleaner:
Prevent clogging by pouring boiling water down drain once a month. If clogs to persist, use a plunger followed by a handful of baking soda with 1/2 cup vinegar; cover drain and let sit for 15 minutes followed by 2 quarts of boiling water.
Vinegar:
Vinegar can be used to clean soap scum, mildew and grime from bathtub, tile and shower curtain, or to unclog a shower head. Use it to remove decal’s or bumper stickers off your car. By adding one cup to each load of laundry you can prevent lint from clinging to your clothes.
Baking Soda:
Baking Soda sprinkled on a damp sponge can clean coffee pots, teapots, microwaves, bathroom tiles, refrigerators and stainless steel sinks.
